It might not be fair to say it, but I’m going to anyway – if I had to declare a favourite of all the Bushcamp Company camps, it would be Chamilandu. I’m not even really sure why, perhaps it’s the open-fronted rooms raised on stilts right on the riverbank, the lounge and dining area has a certain elegance and the food is usually great, or maybe it’s the breeze that in parts of August and September would be better described as a wind, which whips across the wide river in-front. But it could just be the history, all be it in a slightly different location there was a Chamilandu Camp back in the late 80’s long before many of the Bushcamp Company’s sister camps were thought of.
Whatever my reasons, it’s a camp that I like.
When heading south through the Park from the main Mfuwe area you pass Kuyenda first and then there is quite a treck hugging the main Luangwa river until you reach Chamilandu, the first of the southerly cluster of Bushcamp Company camps. It is set in a lovely grove of trees right on the river bank and there is a very productive waterhole just behind camp, this has a raised room overlooking it where brunches are sometimes taken or where guests can just sit in peace waiting for whatever might come down to drink.
This camp is only open for the traditional peak season of June through October.
