Opened in 2023, this is the latest addition to the Mfuwe Lodge & Bushcamp Company portfolio of camps. Kukaya is located on Mfuwe Lagoon and as such is only a few hundred meters from Mfuwe Lodge although the lagoon bends, in typical ox-bow fashion, so the camps are not visible from each other. The camp consists of 6 units, there are 5 double-roomed villas accommodating up to 4 people and one villa with just the one bedroom, each one has its own private deck and small pool. The original plan for Kukaya was that it should offer de-constructed safaris allowing guests the freedom to book and pay separately for their meals and game-viewing activities. We felt that this didn’t really suit the typical international guest so, although the de-constructed option is still available, we are able to book this camp on a fully-inclusive basis as we would any other safari camp in Zambia.
The camp is very well suited to families and small groups and is very well presented, it is close to the main entrance to the South Luangwa and as such guests will encounter more traffic in the busier months than would be evident in more remote corners of the Park but, having said that, there is little doubt that the game-viewing in this area of the Luangwa is pretty much as good as you’ll find anywhere else in the country or even the continent - and I don’t say that flippantly or without due consideration.
